Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Infections

Definition

  • Thirty-two species of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been identified, half of them associated with human infections.
  • CoNS are considerably less virulent than Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Clinical syndromes
    • Prosthetic-device infections
      • S. epidermidis is the species most commonly associated with these infections.
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
      • S. saprophyticus is a pathogen in UTIs among young women.
    • Native-valve endocarditis and osteomyelitis
      • Can be caused by S. lugdunensis and S. schleiferi
