Desquamative Interstitial Pneumonia

Definition

  • Desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP)
    • A rare but distinct type of interstitial lung disease (ILD)
    • Characterized by macrophage infiltration of the intra-alveolar spaces
    • Found exclusively in cigarette smokers
  • Respiratory bronchiolitis–associated ILD (RB-ILD)
    • A subset of DIP that is clinically less severe
    • Characterized by the accumulation of macrophages in peribronchial alveoli
