Erythema Nodosum

Definition

  • A tender, violaceous, nodular rash on the extensor surfaces of lower extremities that often arises in conjunction with:
    • Infection (particularly Streptococcus and tuberculosis)
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Occult neoplasms
    • Sarcoidosis
    • Behçet’s disease
    • Pregnancy
    • Certain medications
  • Biopsies of the rash reveal inflammation of subcutaneous fat (panniculitis).
