  • Genital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are the most common bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the U.S.
  • The spectrum of syndromes includes:
    • Urethritis, proctitis, and conjunctivitis in both sexes
    • Epididymitis in men
    • Mucopurulent cervicitis, acute salpingitis, bartholinitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and Fitz-Hugh–Curtis syndrome (perihepatitis) in women
    • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)
