  • Influenza is an acute respiratory illness caused by infection with one of the influenza viruses.
  • Influenza affects the upper and/or lower respiratory tract and often is accompanied by systemic signs and symptoms such as fever, headache, myalgia, and weakness.
  • Outbreaks occur nearly every winter.
    • Significant morbidity in the general population
    • Increased mortality rates among certain high-risk groups, mainly as a result of pulmonary complications
