Melioidosis

Definition

  • Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei (formerly Pseudomonas pseudomallei).
  • Characterized by a broad spectrum of acute and chronic, local and systemic, clinical and subclinical disease processes, including:
    • Acute, localized skin infection with nodular lymphangitis and regional lymphadenitis
    • Pulmonary infection
    • Bacteremia and sepsis
    • Chronic suppurative infection
  • Also called Whitmore’s disease
