Definition

  • A systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that can be acute or subacute and self-limited, or chronic, waxing and waning over many years
  • Can involve all parts of the body; frequently involves
    • Lung
    • Skin
    • Eye
    • Liver
    • Lymph nodes
  • Characteristics of affected organs
    • Accumulation of T lymphocytes and mononuclear phagocytes
    • Noncaseating epithelioid granulomas
    • Derangements of normal tissue architecture
