Definition

  • A zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensis
  • Characterized by various clinical syndromes
    • Ulceroglandular/glandular
      • 75–85% of cases
    • Oculoglandular
    • Oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal (GI)
    • Pulmonary
    • Typhoidal
  • Humans of any age and either sex are universally susceptible.
  • F. tularensis could be used for bioterrorism as an aerosol or as a contaminant of food or drinking water.
