Leptospirosis

Definition

  • Emerging infectious disease caused by pathogenic leptospires (Leptospira interrogans)
  • Characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, varying from inapparent infection to fulminant, fatal disease
    • Mild form: influenza-like illness with headache and myalgias
    • Severe form (Weil's syndrome): jaundice, renal dysfunction, and hemorrhagic diathesis
