Definition
- Infections caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2)
- Clinically, infections may involve:
- Mucocutaneous surfaces
- Central nervous system (CNS)
- Visceral organs (occasionally)
- Primary HSV infection
- First infection with either HSV-1 or HSV-2 in which the host lacks HSV antibodies in acute-phase serum
- Recurrent HSV infection
- Reactivation of latent HSV-1 or HSV-2
