Definition

  • Serum hemoglobin level or hematocrit less than the expected value for age- and sex-matched normal persons
  • Definition of anemia, according to World Health Organization criteria
    • Adult men
      • Blood hemoglobin concentration < 130 g/L (< 13 g/dL) or
      • Hematocrit < 39%
    • Adult women
      • Blood hemoglobin concentration < 120 g/L (< 12 g/dL) or
      • Hematocrit < 37%
