Definition

  • Inflammation of the vermiform appendix, a diverticular appendage of the cecum
  • Classic presentation
    • Abdominal pain
      • Initially diffuse, epigastric or periumbilical, gradually localizing to the right lower quadrant
    • Anorexia
    • Nausea
    • Fever
  • May be complicated by:
    • Perforation
    • Periappendiceal abscess
