Hemoptysis

Definition

Expectoration of blood from the respiratory tract
- Spectrum ranges from blood-streaking of sputum to coughing up large quantities of pure blood.
- Most common causes
  - Bronchitis
  - Pneumonia
  - Pulmonary embolism
  - Tuberculosis
  - Bronchogenic carcinoma
  - Lung abscess
  - Up to 30% of patients have no identifiable etiology (idiopathic or cryptogenic).
Massive hemoptysis: variably defined as expectoration of > 100 to > 600 mL over a 24-hour period
- Most common causes
  - Tuberculosis
  - Bronchiectasis
