Hyponatremia

Definition

  • Serum sodium [Na+] concentration < 135 mmol/L
    • Usually represents a hypotonic (low serum osmolality) state
    • However, plasma osmolality may be normal or increased in some cases.
  • Clinical presentation
    • May be asymptomatic
    • Signs and symptoms include confusion, lethargy, and disorientation.
    • If severe (< 120 mmol/L) and abrupt, seizures or coma may develop.
