Definition
- Serum sodium [Na+] concentration < 135 mmol/L
- Usually represents a hypotonic (low serum osmolality) state
- However, plasma osmolality may be normal or increased in some cases.
- Clinical presentation
- May be asymptomatic
- Signs and symptoms include confusion, lethargy, and disorientation.
- If severe (< 120 mmol/L) and abrupt, seizures or coma may develop.
