Hyperkalemia

Definition

  • Plasma potassium (K+) concentration > 5.0 mmol/L
  • Usually occurs as a result of either K+ release from cells or decreased renal excretion
  • Severe hyperkalemia may be associated with flaccid paralysis and cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Requires emergent management in a monitored setting
