Definition
- Plasma potassium (K+) concentration > 5.0 mmol/L
- Usually occurs as a result of either K+ release from cells or decreased renal excretion
- Severe hyperkalemia may be associated with flaccid paralysis and cardiac arrhythmias.
- Requires emergent management in a monitored setting
