Definition
- ≥3 erythrocytes per high-power microscopic field in centrifuged urinary sediment from 2 of 3 properly collected urine specimens
- Microscopic hematuria
- Not visible to the naked eye, but detectable by urine dipstick analysis
- May be caused by an abnormality at any level of the urinary tract
- Macroscopic or gross hematuria
- Refers to the presence of frank blood in the urine
- More characteristic of lower urinary tract disease and/or bleeding diatheses than intrinsic renal disease
- Cyst rupture in polycystic kidney disease and flares of immunoglobulin A nephropathy are exceptions.
