- Diabetes mellitus
- Cystic medial necrosis
- Atherosclerosis
- Previous cardiovascular surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, valve replacement, aortic surgery)
- Congenital aortic valve anomalies
- Coarctation of the aorta
- History of aortic trauma
- Otherwise normal women during the third trimester of pregnancy
- Cocaine abuse
- Aortic aneurysm
- Previous aortic dissection
- Inflammatory aortitis
- Family history of dissection
