Definition
- Pathologic dilatation of a segment of the thoracic aorta
- True aneurysm: involves all 3 layers of the vessel wall
- Pseudoaneurysm
- Intimal and medial layers of the vessel wall are disrupted.
- Dilatation is lined by adventitia only and sometimes by perivascular clot.
- Fusiform aneurysm
- Affects entire circumference of a segment of the vessel
- Makes a diffusely dilated lesion
- Saccular aneurysm
- Involves only a portion of the circumference
- Results in outpouching of the vessel wall
- Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm
- Aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta
- Usually contiguous with infradiaphragmatic aneurysms
