Definition
- A condition characterized by low serum calcium concentrations < 2.1 mmol/L (8.5 mg/dL)
- ~55% of calcium is bound to serum proteins, particularly albumin, and it is the free ionized calcium that is biologically active.
- With hypoalbuminemia, total serum calcium is low but the amount of ionized calcium remains normal.
- Symptoms are related to excitation of nerve and muscle cells.
- Implies deficiency of or resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH) or active vitamin D
