Definition
- A viral disorder of the liver of varying severity in which initial hepatitis B infection leads to hepatic inflammation and necrosis that persists for ≥ 6 months
- Mild forms are nonprogressive or only slowly progressive.
- Severe forms may be associated with scarring and architectural reorganization, which can ultimately lead to cirrhosis.
- Clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic infection to debilitating disease or end-stage fatal hepatic failure.
