Chronic Cholecystitis

Definition

  • Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder wall, resulting from:
  • Presence of bacteria in bile occurs in ~25% of patients.
  • Clinical course is variable and may include:
    • Asymptomatic periods
    • Progression to symptomatic gallbladder disease or to acute cholecystitis
    • Presentation with complications
