Chronic Cholecystitis

Definition

Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder wall, resulting from:
- Repeated bouts of subacute or acute cholecystitis
- Persistent mechanical irritation of the gallbladder wall by gallstones
Presence of bacteria in bile occurs in ~25% of patients.
Clinical course is variable and may include:
- Asymptomatic periods
- Progression to symptomatic gallbladder disease or to acute cholecystitis
- Presentation with complications
