Acute Pancreatitis

Definition

  • Acute inflammation of the pancreas
  • Pathologic spectrum of acute pancreatitis ranges from:
    • Edematous pancreatitis (80% of cases), usually mild and self-limited
    • Necrotizing pancreatitis (20% of cases), which can lead to permanent endocrine and exocrine dysfunction and has a mortality rate up to 30%
