Granulocytosis

Definition

  • Granulocytosis
    • An excess of granulocytes in the peripheral blood
      • Sign of many abnormal conditions, including cancer and infection
      • May indicate a paraneoplastic hematologic syndrome with granulocyte count > 7700/μL (2 standard deviations above the population mean)
  • Neutrophilia
    • An excess of neutrophils (a subset of granulocytes) in peripheral blood
  • Leukemoid reaction
    • Persistent neutrophilia with cell counts of > 25,000 to 50,000/μL
