Cancer of the Biliary Tree

Definition

  • Cancers of the biliary tree include:
    • Cancer of the gallbladder
    • Cholangiocarcinoma
      • Typically refers to mucin-producing adenocarcinomas (different from hepatocellular carcinoma) that arise from the bile ducts
      • Grouped by their anatomic site of origin
        • Intrahepatic, hilar (central, ~65% of cholangiocarcinomas)
        • Peripheral (or distal, ~30% of cholangiocarcinomas)
      • Klatskin tumors: nodular tumors arising at the bifurcation of the common bile duct
    • Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater (arises within 2 cm of the distal end of the common bile duct)
      • Adenocarcinoma (90%)
      • Carcinoid tumor
      • Sarcoma
