Definition
- A fasting serum phosphate concentration < 0.8 mmol/L (< 2.5 mg/dL)
- Caused by 1 of 3 primary mechanisms
- Rapid redistribution of phosphate from the extracellular fluid into bone or soft tissue
- Inadequate intestinal phosphate absorption
- Excessive renal phosphate excretion
