Hypophosphatemia

Definition

  • A fasting serum phosphate concentration < 0.8 mmol/L (< 2.5 mg/dL)
  • Caused by 1 of 3 primary mechanisms
    • Rapid redistribution of phosphate from the extracellular fluid into bone or soft tissue
    • Inadequate intestinal phosphate absorption
    • Excessive renal phosphate excretion
