Definition
- Diphyllobothrium latum and other Diphyllobothrium spp. are cestodes (tapeworms).
- Found in lakes, rivers, and deltas of the northern hemisphere, Central Africa, and Chile
- Humans are infected by eating raw freshwater fish.
- Symptoms are rare and usually mild, but infection can cause vitamin B12 deficiency.
- The tapeworm absorbs large amounts of vitamin B12 and interferes with ileal B12 absorption.
