Definition
- Takayasu’s arteritis is a chronic granulomatous vasculitis of the aorta, its branches, and the pulmonary arteries.
- Inflammation can cause vascular stenosis or the formation of aneurysms.
- Usually affects the ascending aorta, but may also involve the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta
- Sometimes referred to as aortic arch syndrome or pulseless disease
- Occlusion of the large arteries originating from the aortic arch can cause diminished or absent peripheral pulses.
